Police: 1 dead in Woodland wreck after teen steals family SUV, collides with 2 vehicles

April 9th, 2023

WOODLAND, Calif. —The Woodland Police Department said a woman died in a crash on Saturday caused by a teen driver in a stolen vehicle attempting to evade police.

"An officer was working in the area, when he observed a vehicle driving erratically," said Sgt. Victoria Danzl, of the Woodland Police.

Danzl said the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but that the driver — identified by police as a 13-year-old — took off, driving erratically, which began a brief pursuit.

Danzl said the driver was traveling northbound on College Street when he entered the intersection around 4:27 p.m.

At least 10 people were injured and transported to the hospital. The extent of those injuries was still being assessed late Saturday, Woodland police said.

Police told KCRA 3's Lee Anne Denyer, in all, three minors were hurt, including a 3-year-old who was transported by air for care.

Early Sunday morning Woodland Police posted an update on Facebook that said the 13-year-old driver was taken into custody for vehicular manslaughter with negligence and evading causing injuries.

The charges against the driver are considered felonies and Woodland police said that the driver will be booked into Yolo County Juvenile Hall after receiving medical treatment.

The intersection remained closed late Saturday night as CHP investigators continued to process the scene.
